Local Seattleite Trevor Bedford has been selected as a recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s annual MacArthur Fellowship, which awards funding to future generations of changemakers.

Bedford, who previously became well-known in Seattle for his contributions to detecting local coronavirus outbreaks early in the pandemic and has worked at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center since 2013, will be receiving $625,000 to continue his research.

“I’m immensely honored and moved to receive this recognition from the MacArthur Foundation,” said Bedford. “It’s been a trying and tragic 20 months for the world, but the scientific response to the pandemic has been unparalleled. I’m proud to have been able to play a role.”
