A research team led by the University of Washington will receive up to $21.2 million as part of Biden’s Cancer Moonshot initiative to reduce cancer fatalities and find a cure for the disease.

Jonathan Liu, director of UW’s molecular biophotonics laboratory, will lead four teams of researchers from UW, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, and Seattle-based Alpenglow Biosciences. Liu and his team are building a system to identify cancerous cells to assist surgeons in removing tumors.

Entrusted with leading this section of the national Cancer Moonshot program, Washington state’s research institutions remain at the forefront of oncology research and innovation.
