New research shows AI can detect breast cancer in MRI scans more accurately than current methods by identifying suspicious tissue and guiding radiologists with heatmaps. Unlike typical models, it learns what healthy tissue looks like and flags abnormalities. Led by researchers from the University of Washington (UW), Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab, and Fred Hutch Cancer Center, the model was trained on 9,500 UW MRIs from 2005 to 2022, offering a more accessible and precise screening tool.
