The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded more than $1.4B in funding to Washington’s life sciences and biotech research industry in 2021. Around 94% of the state’s grant money went to Seattle-based companies and research centers.
The NIH spends more than 80% of its budget on research grants each year with the University of Washington receiving the most at 1,040 grants, totaling $543M. Other recipients in the state include the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason, and the Allen Institute.
“We are tremendously grateful to the medical research champions in the U.S. House and Senate who have spearheaded the recent increases in funding for the NIH,” said Chris Austin, president of United Medical Research, a coalition of research organizations lobbying for the NIH to receive more federal funding. “They are advancing cures, helping communities nationwide to thrive and maintaining America’s leadership in a critical field.”
