The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Ballmer family have gifted UW Medicine $20M in honor of former dean, Dr. Paul Ramsey. The gifts will be used to set up an endowed deanship to aid medical research and training.

The donations are the largest publicly announced medical school deanship in the country, and the first endowments will be available in June. Dr. Tim Dellit, UW Medicine dean and interim CEO can use the money to fund research projects, educational efforts and student programs.

“Because of his deep commitment to the mission of UW Medicine, I can think of no better way to honor my friend, Paul Ramsey, than to ensure its future leaders have the resources they need to advance initiatives that make a meaningful difference to the health of all people,” said Steve Ballmer, who served as Microsoft’s CEO from 2000 to 2014.
