Seattle-based Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center will extend its education offerings to eastern Washington this summer during a three-week STEM program for teachers. The announcement follows the opening of Fred Hutch’s Office of Community and Engagement in Spokane.

The program will run in Spokane and Seattle from July 10-28; it intends to bring scientific resources and education to Washington’s rural areas. Teachers participating in the program will have a chance to work alongside a scientist in a research lab, studying cancer, cellular biology and biotechnology.

“We’re just so excited to make biotech accessible to all teachers,” said Regina Wu, program manager at Fred Hutch. “We’ve been trying really hard to be able to branch out to support all teachers in Washington.”
