How Seattle Scientists are Helping Research a Path to an HIV Cure

Two new studies published in Nature bring the world closer to potential long-term treatments for HIV, highlighting the contributions of Seattle-based researchers. The work includes two scientists from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and two from the University of Washington.

Released on World AIDS Day, the studies reflect decades of global collaboration among more than 40 experts in HIV research. Lillian Cohn, an immunologist and assistant professor at Fred Hutch, called the findings a reason for celebration, noting that HIV science is at its strongest point ever. At the same time, she warned that U.S. government support and funding for HIV programs are declining, creating a paradox where scientific progress continues despite shrinking resources.
